Bantwal (ಬಂಟ್ವಾಳ) is the headquarters of Bantwal taluk, about 25 km east of Mangaluru on the Netravati river. Vittal, about 18 km away in the same taluk, lies in the heart of India's main arecanut-growing area and since 1970 it has had a CPCRI regional station for research on arecanut and cocoa. Farms there grow arecanut, cocoa, pepper, cashew and coconut. Kalladka, famous for its KT tea, sits on the road towards the Ghats. Rain is heavy, about 3,679 mm a year at Vittal, and the Netravati floods every monsoon.

The Rajarajeshwari temple at Polali holds a month-long annual festival in March and April, which includes the five-day Polali Chendu ball game.
