Local business
Karwar (ಕಾರವಾರ) stands where the Kali river meets the Arabian Sea, and it is the headquarters of Uttara Kannada district. Locally it is also known as Kadwad, after a nearby village. The British laid out the town in 1857 as the seat of North Canara, and that role still shapes the week: the district court and the Deputy Commissioner's office bring people in from other taluks. Konkani is the first language of most people in Karwar taluk, and Goa is only about 50 km away.
The sea still feeds a large part of the town. Baithkol, whose old name is said to mean a bay of safety, is a natural harbour sheltered by hills and islands, with a cargo port and a jetty for fishing boats. Local catches include mackerel, sardines, crabs, clams, seer fish and prawns. Two closures shape the year. In 2025 the ban on mechanised fishing boats ran from 1 June to 31 July, and the port may close from mid-May to mid-September.
The navy is Karwar's other big neighbour. INS Kadamba, the base near Binaga that was commissioned in 2005 under Project Seabird, was home to both of India's aircraft carriers as of 2024. Its second phase keeps adding homes for officers, sailors and defence civilians east of Manzil Creek and at Amadalli, with new towers opened as recently as February 2026. Each posting brings a household that needs a house, a school, a clinic and a grocer in a town it does not yet know.
Visitors come for the shore. Rabindranath Tagore beach has the INS Chapal warship museum, a rock garden and a small aquarium. Boats take people to Kurumgad island, about 45 minutes away, and water sports run mostly from October to February. In late December the beach hosts Karavali Utsav; the 2025 edition ran for seven days, from 22 to 28 December, with competitions by day and concerts at night. What visitors want to eat is Karwar's own fish curry with coconut and rice.
Away from the beach, Karwar's economy is broader than tourism. A chemical plant works at Binaga, the Kaiga nuclear power station is about 58 km away, and a dam and power house stand between Kadra and Mallapur. Farmers around the town grow rice, groundnuts, vegetables, onions, watermelons and flowers, and the brackish water of the Kali estuary suits prawn farming. So a Karwar shop or workshop may serve a plant engineer or a farmer as often as a tourist, and its listing should speak to both.

Water sports run mostly from October to February, Navy Week opens the base to the public in December, Karavali Utsav fills Tagore beach in late December, and the ban on mechanised fishing ran from 1 June to 31 July in 2025. Change your hours, menus and photos a week before each.
Goa is about 50 km away, and visitors from there drive down along NH 66. They do not know local names yet, so state how far you are from Tagore beach, the bus stand or the railway station, and make your phone number tappable on every page.
